Perioral Dermatitis Treatment in Geelong
What is Perioral Dermatitis?
If you've got a stubborn rash of little red bumps around your mouth, nose or chin that flares, calms, and flares again no matter what you throw at it, you could be dealing with peri-oral dermatitis.
It's one of the most frustrating skin conditions to live with. It sits right in the centre of your face where you can't hide it, it often shows up at the worst possible times, and the harder you try to fix it the angrier it seems to get. We see this all the time, and the relief on someone's face when they finally understand what it actually is never gets old. At our holistic skin clinic in Belmont, Geelong, we help calm and settle perioral dermatitis without overwhelming your skin.
Peri-oral dermatitis, or POD, is an inflammatory skin barrier disorder. It usually appears around the mouth, nose and chin as redness, sensitivity, small papules and pustules, and sometimes little watery bumps, swelling or dry flaky patches. It can be wet or dry, it varies a lot from person to person, and because of that, it's very often mistaken for acne, which is part of why it's so commonly mistreated.
How Perioral Dermatitis It Shows Up
POD doesn't look identical on everyone, but the most common signs are:
Redness and inflammation around the mouth, nose and chin
Small papules and pustules
Watery, vesicle like bumps
Sensitivity, heat and swelling
Dryness and flaking
What Causes Perioral Dermatitis
The exact cause of POD isn't fully understood, but it very commonly shows up alongside things like:
A stressful period or time of grief
Being unwell, or after a round of antibiotics
Gut infections or imbalances
Mould exposure
Heavy or occlusive skincare and makeup
Harsh products or overly aggressive treatments
Topical steroid use
Hormonal changes
Common Perioral Dermatitis Triggers
Once POD is there, certain things tend to set it off or make it worse:
Histamine and alcohol
Sugar and excess caffeine
Fluoridated toothpaste
Incorrect or harsh skincare products
Topical steroids
You'll notice a theme here. A lot of POD triggers come down to the skin being overloaded or over treated, which is why with this condition, doing less is often a big part of doing better.
Why We Look Deeper Than Your Skin
POD rarely appears out of nowhere. It so often follows a stressful stretch, illness, antibiotics or gut issues, which tells us the surface is only part of the story. That's why we take the time to understand what's been happening for you internally and in your life, not just what's on your face. When we calm things from the inside and stop overwhelming the skin from the outside, it finally gets the chance to settle.
Because POD is a barrier disorder that's so easily aggravated, our approach is gentle, barrier first and never aggressive. The goal is to calm and support your skin, not push it harder. We always begin with a skin consultation so we understand exactly what we're working with and what might be feeding it, and part of that is often simplifying what you're doing at home. These are the treatments we draw on to support calmer, more comfortable skin.
Dermalux LED, calms inflammation and soothes reactive skin with no heat or downtime
Plasma Restore, supports the skin's natural repair process
Byonik pulse triggered laser, supports hydration and overall skin comfort
Aerolase Neo Elite, uses a gentle wound healing approach to support calmer, less inflamed skin

A Few Things You Might Be Wondering
-
It's very commonly mistaken for acne, but it's a different condition, and treating it like acne can actually make it worse. Working out what you're really dealing with is the first and most important step.
-
Often, because the things triggering it, like harsh products, steroids or an overloaded routine, haven't been addressed, and the barrier hasn't had a chance to recover. Once we calm the triggers and support the skin, things can really start to shift.
-
Not necessarily, but simplifying is often a big part of getting POD under control. We'll guide you on what to pause and what to keep, so your skin isn't fighting your routine.
